Speed
Cameras 'pointless', by Top Cop...
|
| I
|
| A Top Cop hit out at speed
cameras yesterday - saying they were "pointless". Chief
Constable Paul Garvin also accused the Government and other police chiefs
of using misleading statistics to justify the use of Gatsos. |
| I
|
| Mr Garvin, head of Durham
Police, said: "The speed camera issue is not a point of principal, it
is a fact that they are pointless". He spoke out as Transport
Secretary Alistair Darling was claiming casualties at fixed camera sites
had fallen by 40 per cent, saving 100 lives a year. |
| I
|
| Mr Garvin said: "The
pro-camera lobby deliberately misquote statistics to mislead people to
justify their position. It is disingenuous if we are really intent
on reducing casualties as opposed to enforcing speed limits and dishing
out tickets". |
| I
|
| "More accidents are
caused by inattention, driving under the influence of drink and drugs or
within the limit but to fast for conditions". |
| I
|
| Mr Gavin, whose officers do
not use fixed cameras, accused some forces of having a "woolly"
way of calculating the distance over which Gatsos affect accident
rates. A university report claimed 100 fewer people a year were
killed and 700 hurt thanks to Gatsos. |
